  • Your device’s Google Play Advertising ID.
  • Some or all of the following information about your device: device type (e.g. smartphone, tablet, etc.), operating system (e.g. iOS, Android, Windows, Blackberry), network provider, Internet (IP) address, which mobile browser you use (e.g. Safari, Chrome etc.), , platform, SDK version, timestamp, API key (identifier for application), application version, , Model, manufacture and OS version of device, session start/stop time, locale (specific location where a given language is spoken), timezone, and network status such as WiFi, WiFi networks you have configured and the geo-location of your device (using GPS or other geo-location data).
  • The list of applications installed on your phone, including which applications are on your home screen and dock.
  • The number of times you run an application, including the time and place where you ran it (specifically, the cell tower or WiFi network you were connected to).
  • The number of times you turn on your phone (i.e., view your lock screen), and what you do subsequently such as launching an application, unlocking your screen, or simply turning the screen back off (e.g., just glancing at the clock).
  • Information from connected Bluetooth devices, such as the Bluetooth device ID of your car.
  • Information from the sensors in your phone, such as the accelerometer, gyroscope, and GPS (GPS is used exceptionally sparingly in order to save your battery).
  • Information about Offerings you have received:
    • Some or all of the following information about the Offerings you have viewed: (i) the content type of the Offerings (what the Offering is about, e.g., games, finance, entertainment, news); (ii) the Offering type (e.g. whether the Offering is text, image, or video based ); (iii) where the Offering is being served (e.g. the website on or application in which the Offering appears); and (iv) certain information about post-click/consumption activity in relation to the Offering.
    • On occasion, our subscribing third party mobile publishers or application developers may also disclose to us information they have separately collected about you so that we can improve the relevance of the Offerings we serve on their behalf. They do this in accordance with their own specific privacy policies and subject to their own applicable legal requirements. We do not use the information they provide to us for any purpose other than improving personalization of Offerings on their behalf.
    • There is certain data that although not personally identifiable we consider sensitive, such as viewing of sites with sexual content or information indicating a users’ specific medical condition. We do not use these types of sensitive data from one site for tailoring Offerings in other publishers across our network.
  • Quettra Audience Platform
    • The Quettra Audience Platform also provides information to third party publishers and application developers about how you use and engage with their applications as well as how sites or applications are performing across different handsets, including but not limited to tracking behavior conversions across multiple Offerings.
    • Quettra obtains this information as a result of data being sent via an SDK embedded by the third party publisher or application developer in an application you installed.
    • Each third party publisher and application developer is responsible for obtaining all applicable consents to enable Quettra to collect information from your device.

?Google Ventures-funded Quettra raises $2.9M to dig up info on mobile subs for advertisers

By Tammy Parker

Quettra just emerged from stealth mode with six employees, three interns, $2.9 million in seed-round funding and a plan to develop a mobile platform that founder and CEO Ankit Jain says will provide "a thorough understanding of the user" to advertisers.

Jain, former head of search and discovery at Google's (NASDAQ: GOOG) Google Play app store, quietly started Quettra one year ago "with the goal of making it easier for marketers to reach the right audience at the right time," he said in an entry on the company's blog.

"We're building software that can run on hundreds of millions of devices and systems that can process and organize tens of terabytes daily. The software and systems that we are building will serve personalized content and meaningful experiences at lightning speeds to users of our partners' applications," Jain said.

He indicated current mobile advertising solutions provide too little user information to advertisers to be sufficiently useful. Quettra, Jain said, intends to take advantage of its understanding of mobile operating systems to build rich profiles of mobile users that can be used to ensure mobile advertisements match individual tastes and preferences.

"We think of advertising as a three-layer stack: at the base is a thorough understanding of the user, in the middle is the right set of advertisers and campaigns, and finally at the top is the perfect format and experience for a given user and ad. At Quettra, we are starting from the base and will work our way up this stack as we grow," Jain wrote.

Google Ventures, the venture capital investment arm of Google, stepped in as one of the venture capital firms committing to provide seed funding for Quettra. Though it does not always happen, Google has been known to acquire companies funded by Google Ventures, with home automation company Nest Labs, acquired earlier this year for $3.2 billion, being a prime example.

Others backing Quettra's $2.9 million seed round include CrunchFund, Data Collective, Horizons Ventures, Miramar Digital Ventures and SV Angel. The company also has numerous angel investors. China's Sungy Mobile, the mobile app and platform development firm best known for GO Launcher and Locker Android apps, is a strategic investor.

Jain is a bit cagey when it comes to divulging specifics regarding what Quettra is doing, but he told TechCrunch that the Mountain View, Calif., company is ready to engage in early testing. Further, he told Re/code that Quettra "will be very transparent about what data we collect."

But privacy advocates might find cause for alarm when it comes to Quettra's plans. A look at Quettra's privacy policy reveals that the startup intends to track individual users' phone usage patterns immediately upon their installation of its SDK.

"Quettra might notice that you tend to check the weather at home in the morning, your calendar when you get to work, and maps when you're in your car," the policy says, noting the company's service will enable third-party publishers and developers to leverage such data in order to personalize their offerings.

Other things tracked by Quettra will include a device's Google Play advertising ID; device model and operating system information; Wi-Fi networks configured by the user; device geo-location data; the number of times a user runs and app, including the time and place where it was run; the number of times a user switches on the phone and what the user subsequently does, such as launching an app, unlocking the screen, or turning the screen back off.

In related news, antivirus-software pioneer John McAfee contends smartphones are being used to spy on American consumers. McAfee, who made a surprise appearance at the Def Con hacker convention in Las Vegas, said he is dumping all of his smartphones, according to The Wall Street Journal. "The most promising privacy thing is stupid phones," he said.

Quettra Privacy Policy

Last Updated: August 1, 2014

Quettra, Inc. (“Quettra” or “we”) through its proprietary Quettra Software Development Kit (“SDK”) offers personalization as a service product that permits third party publishers and application developers integrating our SDK to provide services and products customized to your interests and geographical location which we infer from data and information we collect about you and your interactions with your mobile device. By using an application that integrates the Quettra SDK, you consent to the processing and use of such data and information in accordance with this privacy policy. In this policy we refer to applications that integrate the Quettra SDK as “Apps”. We are only responsible for adherence to this Privacy Policy and we are not responsible for the content or services (“Offerings”) you receive or for any transaction you may enter into as a consequence of receiving such Offerings.

Data collection and processing

The Quettra SDK collects data from your phone to provide you with personalized services across different Apps that have been installed on your phone. For example, Quettra might notice that you tend to check the weather at home in the morning, your calendar when you get to work, and maps when you’re in your car. Quettra provides a service to third party publishers and developers to leverage such data in order to personalize their Offerings to you. Quettra’s data collection is limited to the data accessible available to the application that includes the Quettra SDK; we respect the Android permissions you have explicitly approved. We believe this will improve your experience by replacing the generic and non-personalized Offerings that are presented to you.

In order to do this, the Quettra SDK records items such as:

The system starts to collect data as soon as you install an app that integrates the Quettra SDK. Your installation of such an app constitutes a legally binding acceptance of this Policy. The use of collected data continues under this policy until you either (a) remove any application that integrates the Quettra SDK from your phone or (b) opt-out of interest-based ads on your device. You can do so by opening the Google Settings application, clicking on the “Ads” option and then selecting the checkbox next to “Opt out of interest-based ads”. We respect this decision of yours until you explicitly uncheck the box next to “Opt out of interest based ads.” Any data that is collected is encrypted and then uploaded from your phone over a secured connection to our servers.

Some of the data and information we collect can indirectly be used to identify you (such as your device’s Google Play advertising ID until it is reset), while other data and information (such as your location or how often you use a certain app) can only be used to identify you when combined with other information. As described below, we also use some of this data and information in an anonymous or aggregate form that does not identify you personally, in order to improve our services and work with entities with which we have a strategic relationship.

The Quettra SDK may automatically receive and record information on our server logs from your browser or device through the use of “cookies”. “Cookies” are identifiers we transfer to your browser or device that allow us to recognize your browser or device and tell us how and when pages and features in our product or services are visited and by how many people. You can change the preferences on your browser or device to prevent or limit your device’s acceptance of cookies, but this may prevent you from taking advantage of some of the features of the Offerings.

Other data usage

We may use the information we collect about you in an anonymized way or combine it with the data of other users in an anonymized, aggregated way to improve our algorithms, measure service usage, publish summaries online or offline, and to develop new features such as recognizing popular apps. We may also use your data to identify apps, products and services that may be of interest to you so that we can recommend them to you. We will not display information where individual users can be recognized. Furthermore, Quettra team members (e.g. engineers and data scientists) may need to occasionally review raw data and the results to improve the system. We may also share your anonymized or aggregated information with third parties such as vendors, agents, advertisers, or other entities with which we have a strategic relationship.

How long does Quettra keep information for?

We retain information collected on third-party applications and web sites for a period of 180 days, unless otherwise required by law. After 180 days we further anonymize the data by aggregating it before storing it for analytical purposes.

Sharing your personally identifiable data with third parties

We currently do not collect any of your personally identified data. However, even if we had any access to your personally identifiable data, we will not disclose such data to third parties unless:

  1. You have given explicit consent to each such disclosure (for example, to a third party payment processor).
  2. We are required to comply with a legal obligation (and in this case, we will provide you notice unless we are prevented by law from doing so).
  3. If our business or assets, or parts of them, are acquired by a third party.
Third parties who receive your personally identifiable data from us will be bound by applicable data protection legislation and/or this privacy policy concerning the disclosed data.

The security of our systems

We use third party vendors and hosting solutions to provide the necessary hardware, software, networking, storage, and related technology required to provide the service. By submitting your personal data, you agree to this. We use commercially reasonable physical and technical safeguards to secure your data. We encrypt the communication channels using Secure Sockets Layer. However, we cannot guarantee the security of your data, which may be compromised by unauthorized entry or use, hardware or software failure, and other factors.

Age requirements

The Quettra SDK is not meant to collect data about or provide services to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect or solicit any data from anyone under 13. If you are under 13, please do not attempt to download or use applications that integrate the Quettra SDK or send any personal information about yourself to us. If we find out that we have collected any personal information from someone under 13, we will delete that information as quickly as possible. If you believe someone under 13 is using an application that integrates the Quettra SDK or may have provided us personal information, please contact us at privacy@quettra.com.

International transfers

We may share your information with clients, affiliates and other third parties described above who are based in countries outside of your country of residence (for example, if you are an EU resident, we may share your information with our non-EU clients or affiliates). While some countries may not have data protection laws that are equivalent to those of the country in which you reside, we will take all reasonable measures to protect your information in accordance with this Privacy Policy and applicable legal requirements.

Your California privacy rights

California law permits residents of California to request certain details about what personal information a company shares with third parties for the third parties' direct marketing purposes. We do not share your personal information with third parties for the third parties’ own and independent direct marketing purposes unless we receive your permission. If you have questions about our sharing practices or your rights under California law, please write us at:

Changes to our privacy policy

We reserve the right to alter our privacy policy at any time. We will notify you of significant alterations with reasonable notice via our Twitter account or otherwise. By continuing to use applications that integrate the Quettra SDK after we make change to our privacy policy, you agree to all of the changes. Whenever we use information we have collected, it will be subject to the privacy policy in place at the time we use the information.
